1. Prepare the cards

Choose a card for each guest, plus pens or small markers. Print the caller checklist for the host. Mark the free center before starting. Explain whether the first line ends the game or whether you will play several rounds.

2. Pick words randomly

Cut a separate copy of the word list into slips and mix them in a bowl, or use a random selection method that does not repeat words. The checklist is for tracking calls; reading it top to bottom is not random.

3. Call and mark

Read one word clearly and allow guests time to find it. A card may not contain every word in the caller list. A horizontal, vertical or diagonal line of five marked spaces wins. The free center counts as marked.

4. Check the result

Ask the player to read the winning line and verify each word against the called list. Several people can win on the same call. Agree on a shared win or a tie-break before playing; distinct card arrangements do not eliminate ties.

5. Add a quiet activity

The word search uses the first 12 words in your editor list. Words run right, down or diagonally down-right. Keep the answer page with the host until everyone has finished.
